“Filming Out on the Street” Workshop

The Laboratory for the Urban Commons invites students, filmmakers, artists, researchers, activists, and people who want to re-imagine the city, to participate in its upcoming workshop led by Jasmina Metwaly and Philip Rizk on Wednesday 03 October 2018.

Through its programming of screenings and workshops, the Laboratory for the Urban Commons would like to initiate a non-formal educational process that along with its participants will set up the conditions for critical moving image research, development and production.

This all-day workshop will explore the ways in which we formulate the everyday performativity of the workplace and our positioning as participants within a broader social struggle, by developing approaches and methodologies between and beyond fiction, theatricality and documentary. Together with Jasmina Metwaly and Philip Rizk, who collaborated with nine workers through an acting workshop in Helwan, one of Egypt’s working class neighborhoods, we would like to invite our participants to explore these experiences as a tool.

In order to participate, we kindly ask you to send us a short statement describing your current activities and areas of interest along with a short bio to: [email protected] by Friday 28 September 2018.

The workshop follows the screening of the film Out on the Street (2015) in the presence of the artists and filmmakers Jasmina Metwaly and Philip Rizk at the Greek Film Archive, on Tuesday 02 October 2018, at 8:00 pm.

The selected participants will be invited to the screening of Out on the Street at the Greek Film Archive.

The Laboratory for the Urban Commons is a collective that develops and produces research, artistic practices, urban interventions and education. This broad composition of people desires the re-imagination of the everyday through research-led tactics and non-formal and informal strategies. The Laboratory for the Urban Commons operates by creating a self-testing and self-generating area for research and production, developing methods that initiate, document and expand forms of critical discourse, in parallel to the unfolding of counter-hegemonic social and artistic practices. Looking towards an extended Mediterranean with solidarity and anticipation, the Laboratory for the Urban Commons is operating out of Athens.
